DHJ Quick Take: Pelicans’ Pursuit Of Brown
- New Orleans Interest: The New Orleans Pelicans are reportedly interested in executing a blockbuster trade for Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown this offseason.
- Proposed Trade Blueprint: If New Orleans aggressively pursues the 2024 Finals MVP, the foundation of their trade offer is expected to center directly around Dejounte Murray, Trey Murphy III and significant draft capital.
- Boston’s Financial Leverage: Brown has no mechanical way to block a potential destination; he lacks a no-trade clause on his contract and is scheduled to earn $57.1 million next season.
The New Orleans Pelicans are interested in trading for Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
Brown will make $57.1 million next season. He doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract, so he can’t stop the Celtics from trading him if that’s the route Brad Stevens wants to take this summer.
Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson reports that if the Pelicans aggressively pursue Brown, the blueprint for their blockbuster trade offer would center directly around Dejounte Murray, Trey Murphy III and significant draft capital.
Brown is eligible for a two-year, $142 million extension in July. The 2024 Finals MVP signed a massive five-year, $285 million extension with the Celtics in 2023.
In 2024, Brown led Boston to the championship against the Dallas Mavericks. Some fans believe Brown wants his “own team” instead of sharing the spotlight with Jayson Tatum and wouldn’t mind getting traded this summer, but there has been no credible reporting supporting that theory.
Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game for the Celtics this season. The five-time All-Star put up 25.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game against the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 2026 playoffs, a series the Celtics stunningly lost in seven games despite taking a 3-1 lead.
The 29-year-old Brown has career averages of 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in the regular season and 19.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in the playoffs. The California product was the third overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.
New Orleans went 26-56 this season. Former Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley is the new coach of the Pelicans, who haven’t made the playoffs since 2024.
Along with the Pelicans, Brown has been linked to the Atlanta Hawks, Houston Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers in trade rumors.
