DHJ Quick Take: Antetokounmpo’s Preferred Destinations
- Target Teams: Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is interested in a trade to either the Miami Heat or the Boston Celtics as he looks to move on this offseason.
- Mutual Split Looming: Following a disappointing season where Milwaukee missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016, both Antetokounmpo and the franchise agree that the time has come to part ways, leaving the Bucks “open for business” on trade offers.
- Contractual Leverage: The 2021 Finals MVP is scheduled to earn $58.5 million next season and holds a $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season; however, because he lacks a no-trade clause, Milwaukee retains full structural control over his ultimate destination.
Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is interested in getting traded to the Miami Heat or Boston Celtics this offseason, according to Sam Amick and Eric Nehm of The Athletic.
The Bucks and Antetokounmpo are expected to part ways this summer.
“The rumors of Giannis’ openness to Miami have persisted for years, and league sources indicate that he remains both intrigued and impressed with the organization’s winning culture,” Amick and Nehm wrote. “But the more specific question, and the thing that is known to be a concern for Antetokounmpo, is this: Could the Heat truly contend anytime soon if they have to gut their roster to get him?
“And then there’s the question of how Antetokounmpo sees the Celtics situation. That might matter more than anything else. While league sources have long maintained that he’s interested in joining the Heat, there are also indications that he’s very intrigued with the prospect of joining a Celtics team that, by any objective measure, is deeper and more dynamic than Miami’s and could thus remain more competitive after a blockbuster deal. And again, Antetokounmpo’s focus on getting back to title contention should not be overlooked.”
The Bucks and Heat missed the playoffs this season, while the Celtics lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round in seven games despite taking a 3-1 lead.
The Bucks are open for business on trade calls and offers for Antetokounmpo, who believes the time has come for him and the franchise to part ways. Antetokounmpo guided the Bucks to the 2021 championship in six games against the Phoenix Suns. Milwaukee has won just one playoff series since then and missed the playoffs this year for the first time since 2016.
A future Hall of Famer, Antetokounmpo has spent his entire NBA career with the Bucks. He’s a two-time MVP, one-time Finals MVP, one-time Defensive Player of the Year and 10-time All-Star.
Antetokounmpo will make $58.5 million next season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season.
A top-75 player of all time, Antetokounmpo holds career averages of 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. The star forward doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract.
All signs point toward the Bucks trading Antetokounmpo this offseason. It will be fascinating to see where Giannis is playing next season. Most people who cover the NBA believe the Heat will land the swingman. Antetokounmpo and Miami All-Star Bam Adebayo have the same agent.
“The noise surrounding the Miami Heat and Antetokounmpo remains louder than all the rest. Many people around the league, from agents to executives, continue to believe that Antetokounmpo will end up in Miami when this saga finally comes to an end,” Amick and Nehm wrote.
