DHJ Quick Take: Chaos in NYC After Historic Comeback

  • Wembanyama Targeted: Following a crushing Game 4 loss, San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama was swarmed by jeering New York Knicks fans outside the team hotel, where at least one egg was thrown directly in his direction.
  • Record-Breaking Collapse: The hotel incident capped off a brutal night for the Spurs, who fell to the brink of elimination after blowing a massive 29-point lead, allowing the Knicks to complete the largest comeback victory in NBA Finals history.
  • Bedlam and Arrests: The historic New York victory sparked citywide pandemonium, resulting in clashes with law enforcement that led to the New York Police Department taking 56 individuals into custody on charges ranging from assault to disorderly conduct.

After the New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals, Knicks fans threw eggs at Victor Wembanyama at the Spurs hotel.

New York City was in utter chaos on Wednesday, as the Knicks completed the largest comeback in NBA Finals history. The Spurs blew a 29-point lead and are now one loss away from losing the series.

According to the New York Police Department, 56 people were taken into custody for charges that ranged from assault to disorderly conduct after Game 4.

“Once again, there were large crowds of people who engaged in incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior last night both during and after the game,” the police department said in a statement.

An NYPD spokesperson said they had nothing on file about the egg incident. The Spurs did not immediately respond to a request from the media seeking clarity on whether the object struck Wembanyama.

As expected, Wembanyama was visibly distraught after Game 4. The Spurs blew a golden opportunity to tie the series. Now, they have to win three games in a row to become champions like LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers did in the 2016 NBA Finals against the 73-9 Golden State Warriors.

“What’s going through my mind right now?” Wembanyama said. “I think it’s going to go one of two ways: a bad one and a good one. The bad one would be giving up. The good one would be getting stronger through this, getting more together. I know this is what we’re going to do.”

Wembanyama finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks in Game 4. He shot only 9-of-25 from the field and missed a pair of free throws with 1:47 remaining and his team trailing 104-103.

The Knicks won Game 4 by a final score of 107-106. New York forward OG Anunoby tipped in a Jalen Brunson miss on a 3-pointer in the final seconds to punctuate the historic comeback win.

“We’ve proven we can surpass these difficulties,” Wembanyama said. “Even though we haven’t been there before, I’m convinced we’re built that way and we’re going to use the better of this. It’s going to tighten us up.”

Game 5 is on Saturday back in San Antonio. We’ll see if Wembanyama and the Spurs have anything left in the tank after choking Game 4.
